How it works

From idea to flipbook

Every piece in the journal takes the same path. Here it is, step by step.

By Keybaki Journal · · Page 4 of the flipbook

A piece in the Keybaki Journal starts as an idea. Sometimes it’s ours, and we ask someone to write it. Sometimes it’s yours, and you send it to us.

Asked and written

When we ask someone to write, we send them a short brief: what the piece is for, who will read it, and roughly how long it should be. The brief says what would help, never what to say. Then the writer writes, in their own words.

Edited, never rewritten

Every piece is edited, but only for length, clarity and spelling. We don’t change what a writer says, and we don’t add claims they didn’t make. When a piece mentions a fact or a figure, we ask where it comes from.

Approved before anything else

The writer sees the edited version and approves it. Nothing is laid out for publication until they have. For a learner under 18, their parent or guardian has to give written consent as well; the page for parents in this issue explains how.

Laid out and published

Approved pieces are laid out as the pages of an issue, with a cover and a contents page. The pages become the flipbook on keybaki.com/journal, which you can read on a phone or a computer, and, where we offer it, a PDF of the issue to download.

That’s the whole path. This issue has just been along it.
